Ask about how much of the continent has already been mapped, and what the reward is. If at least 1/3 of the continent has been mapped already, go to the shop and see if there’s a map that’s cheaper than the reward, which shows 1/3 of the continent. Otherwise (or if I can’t afford the map), just hunt for some monsters while mapping out the area.
