You pick up the exclamation mark, which is not an actual object and is not real. Needless to say, it does not appear in your inventory and does not affect the story or you in any way.

A lot of retro games have shout-outs from the programmers from a random NPC. (Examples include Ultima series and EarthBound/Mother series.) Make one of the rats possessed with the voice of the programmer that made the comic, and the rat temporarily join the party… as a mount!
sing the Jane killjoy song to calm the rats with your bad voice

Now grab on of those “?” floating around your confused head.

Notice how a murderous rat is about to tear you into pieces, then poke it with the unexisting “!”

Grab the bag of things unkown, get into a corner and be ready to open it if your party is losing the fight.
Just get the heck out of there already. You don’t know how much longer that shrink spell will last.
punch a rat in the nose, then run as fast as you can to the exit
Look up. If the ceiling is high enough, ask Jane to reverse the shrinking spell so that these rats are no longer a threat.

Wear the exclamation point as an imaginary and very stylish tie!
