Have absolute trust in him based on his uniform.
Warn him that his long flowing clothing may be sucked into random magical rifts if he is not careful.
Compliment him on his scarf thing
Compliment his costume and see if he’ll join you

Isn’t there a rule that says something like, “if you see a person you never seen before, and he/she/it is wearing your army’s colors, identify wether or not they are friend or foe”?

Shout an unreasonable demand.

Question his allegiance
Find out what he’s looking at.
Get to location out of sight and yell something at him to see how/if he reacts
